This is the townhouse Jane Austen shared with her sister Cassandra and their parents. Your apartment occupies the former kitchen and butler’s pantry: the domestic heart of a home with an extraordinary place in literary history.

The vast kitchen hearths, flagstone floors and Georgian panelling give that history a presence you can feel. Settle into an armchair where family meals were once prepared, sleep in the former pantry, and make a quiet morning of the rose-filled courtyard.

  1. 1801

    A new home in Bath

    After her father retired, Jane left Steventon with her family. That year they settled at 4 Sydney Place: Jane, Cassandra and their parents, with Sydney Gardens just across the road.

    An address inside a book

    George Austen signed his copy of Excursions from Bath “Geo. Austen 4 Sydney Terrace 1802”. Jane later owned the same book; it survives today at Jane Austen’s House.

    A novel waiting for its readers

    During the Sydney Place years, Susan—the early version of Northanger Abbey—was sold to Crosby & Co for £10. The publisher never brought it out.

    Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published after Austen’s death. Bath fills their pages, though Persuasion was written later at Chawton, in 1815–1816.

Hi, I’m Maxwell. My wife Anna and I are restoring an old watermill and farm in Portugal, and share our homes in Bath and North Wales while we work and travel.

Check in from 4pm and check out by 11am. Self check-in details are provided privately for your stay. Maxwell and the Bath team are available to help.

The sleeping arrangements+

Two bedrooms for up to three guests: an antique double bed in the main bedroom and a Japanese futon on a tatami base in the map room. The entire apartment and both courtyards are exclusively yours.

Parking & access+

There is no parking on the property. This is an apartment in a historic townhouse; please discuss any particular access needs with us before booking.

Prices & cancellation+

Book direct for 10% less than the Airbnb total for the same dates and guests. Your exact total and booking terms are shown before payment. There are no cleaning fees or added taxes.
